The exhibition Minimal Difference between This and That presents new works by Peter Rauch, a Slovenian visual artist who examines the fundamental questions of the nature and the phenomenality of objects and explores the laws of moving matter.
If Rauch had ordinarily employed photography to record and analyse all sorts of objects that are a result of human intervention, then, in his comprehensive work Minimal Difference between This and That, he focuses on the fundamental questions of objects as such. What is it that defines and constitutes a physical object? Does an object really represent an overall structure composed of smaller elements that by themselves have no purpose? The saturation of the contemporary cultural environment with all kinds of objects triggered the artist’s obsession with them. First, he creatively dealt with them through a medium – photography, but then the two-dimensional image and its frame became too narrow. The works expanded into space, which led to an in-depth theoretical and practical research of the philosophical and structural givenness of physical objects and the consideration of their mutual dependencies. In order for a certain matter to change shape or start moving, it needs a force triggered by another matter. The artist’s body thus became a mediator and at the same time the motor of the transformation of various matters with the central point of the exhibited works being the act of throwing.
